OPIN I E /OPINION Ketenbrede samenwerking kan de positie van de aardappel verder versterken De vraag naar aardappelen neemt wereldwijd toe. De Nederlandse aardappelketen heeft de telers in de nieuwe aardappelgebieden veel te bieden. Gelukkig wordt er op veel plaatsen in de wereld en door veel partijen geïnvesteerd in innovaties. Een belangrijke bijdrage komt uit het Nederlandse topsectorenbeleid. Sinds 2010 worden innovatiegelden van de rijksoverheid geïnvesteerd langs de lijn van topsectoren, waarbij de middelen worden gematcht door het bedrijfsleven. Topsectoren zijn de sectoren waarin Nederland nu haar geld verdient en dat in de toekomst nog sterker verwacht te doen. De topsectoren Agri & Food en Tuinbouw & Uitgangsmaterialen investeren veel in de aardappel. Het gaat om publiek­private innovatieprojecten gericht op het realiseren van beter uitgangsmateriaal en duurzamer telen, bewaren en verwerken. Kernwoorden zijn innovatieve veredelingstechnieken, gezonde bodem, precisielandbouw, phenotyping, autonome navigatie/robotica, big data en Internet of Things. Recent is ook de topsector High Tech Systems & Materials (HTSM) aangesloten via cross­over projecten om de aardappel een inspiratie te laten zijn voor alles wat Hightech Nederland te bieden heeft. Al met al geeft dit een prachtig palet aan projecten gericht op uitdagingen die de aardappel kent, zowel in Nederland als in opkomende landen als China en India, en in productielanden van de toekomst als Tanzania en Bangladesh. Op de vakbeurs Potato Europe zullen bedrijven en instellingen dit jaar weer veel nieuwe rassen, machines, precisielandbouwtoepassingen en bewaarmethoden tonen, waarvan sommigen met dank aan het topsectorenbeleid. Maar is dit genoeg voor de uitdagingen die er in de (inter)nationale aardappelsector liggen? De opbrengsten per hectare nemen, zeker in de ontwikkelde gebieden, de laatste jaren nauwelijks nog toe. Het rendement staat hierdoor onder druk. Daarnaast vraagt de maatschappij om meer ecologische duurzaamheid en transparantie van de keten. Uitdagingen die alleen goed zijn op te pakken door een brede samenwerking van bedrijfsleven, overheid en kennisinstellingen binnen de aardappelketen, en een krachtenbundeling internationaal. HOpelijk draagt deze vakbeurs daaraan bij. The Dutch potato chain has much to offer for growers in the new potato cultivation areas. Fortunately, many parties are investing in innovations in many places in the world. An important contribution comes from top sector policy in the Netherlands. Since 2010, innovation grants from the national government have been invested along the line of top sectors, with the input being matched by trade and industry. Top sectors are the sectors in which the Netherlands currently earns its money and expects this to increase in the future. The Agri & Food and Horticulture & Planting stock top sectors invest a great deal in the potato. This involves public­private innovation projects with a focus on realising better planting stock, and more sustainable growing, storing and processing. Key words are innovative breeding techniques, healthy soil, precision farming, phenotyping, autonomous navigation, robotics, big data and the Internet of Things. High Tech Systems & Materials (HTSM) has also recently joined the top sector via crossover projects so that the potato can become an inspiration for all that Hightech Nederland has to offer. All in all, we now have a wonderful palette of projects that focuses on the challenges potato cultivation is confronted with, in the Netherlands as well as in emerging countries such as China and India, and in production countries of the future such as Tanzania and Bangladesh. At the PotatoEurope trade show, businesses and institutions will again be exhibiting many new varieties, machinery, precision farming applications and storage methods, some of which thanks to the top sector policy. But will this be enough for the challenges facing the national and international potato sectors? The yields per hectare have increased very little in recent years, certainly in the developed areas. Returns are therefore under pressure. Moreover, society is asking for more ecological sustainability and transparency in the chain. These are challenges that can only be properly addressed by broad­based cooperation between the business community, the government and the knowledge institutions within the potato chain, and by an international concentration of strength.
