Met de aankoop willen ze aangeven dat er voor hoogwaardige fritesaardappelen van de jonge polderkleigrond een interessante internationale markt voorhanden is. In this edition of PotatoEurope, FarmCoach Philip Kroes, together with potato trading company APF Holland, both from Dronten, are the buyers of the Innovator crop in the demonstration field. With their purchase, they want to signify that there’s an interesting international market for high-quality French-fry potatoes from the young clay polder soil. Op het rooiveld van PotatoEurope spreken we voorafgaand aan de beurs Philip Kroes van FarmCoaching en Martin de Visser en Pieter Boone, de eigenaren van APF Holland. Het is in de laatste week van juli en het is dan bijzonder nat op de akker van het aardappeldemoveld. De Innovators die hier groeien hebben op het oog duidelijk te lijden gehad van het bijzondere groeiseizoen dat hieraan vooraf ging. Na de relatief vroege pootdatum, 31 maart, volgde een periode van droogte met lage temperaturen. Het gewas ontwikkelde zich traag en vormde gemiddeld ruim twee stengels per poter. Toch verwacht Kroes desondanks mooie fritesaardappelen van het veld te kunnen betrekken, dankzij de vruchtbare kleigrond. Hij vertelt dat hij met zijn bedrijf FarmCoaching de Innovator wil verhandelen in een markt waar maximale aardappelkwaliteit noodzakelijk is. Sinds het jaar 2013 levert zijn onderneming de aardappelen aan de luxe fastfoodketen Five Guys in Londen. “In dat jaar was er in Groot­Brittannië een tekort aan kwalitatief goede aardappelen. It’s the last week of July, and it’s extremely wet in the potato demonstration fields. The Innovators that grow here have clearly suffered from this year’s unusual growing season. The relatively early planting, on 31 March, was followed by a period of drought and low temperatures. The crop developed slowly and formed, on average, two stems per planted potato. Yet Kroes still expects a good harvest of French­fry potatoes, thanks to the fertile clay soil.
